Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks, Newham - Celebrating the unique

The team’s collaborative approach to the redevelopment of Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks demonstrated the importance of capitalising on local community assets, inspiration and potential.

To strengthen people’s connection to the Gasworks, the team focused on celebrating the site’s unique history and the significance it had in shaping London. Alongside exhibitions, pop-ups and workshops, the team worked closely with a local historian, running guided tours as part of a local heritage festival, welcoming over 200 people to the site. The memories and stories of those who worked on the 7 Grade II Listed gasworks were also recorded, which helped us create a community around the gasworks and restore a sense of belonging to a site that’s been derelict for decades.

In addition, we worked with over 140 students from local schools, listening to their ideas and gathering their feedback on the design proposals. Alongside design, heritage and ecology workshops we hosted an exhibition and provided career insights in the built environment to a local sixth form.
