The shaping of successful and healthy communities and neighbourhoods is all about collaborative engagement and urban integration. Balancing the power of decisions that enable the delivery of equitable, and inclusive new places should be at the heart of every urban design process – no matter how big or small.

But how do we establish the right vision to guide the creation of new neighbourhoods or communities?

Iceni’s Design Team has developed a matrix born from our deep understanding of place through the lens of local communities, their aspirations, and the resources available to deliver such success. This allows us to pinpoint the appropriate Vision to guide the engagement, design and delivery of the place.

Four key pillars are central to driving this process.

Our work begins by establishing a multi-layered system to measure success locally, regionally, and nationally. Each level is examined and weighted to identify shared parameters that ensure benefits are delivered across at least two of these tiers. New developments that will be felt at a local level, should not only benefit at that level, but should also aspire to have a positive impact, at a regional level or beyond, according to scale. The matrix is based on parameters such as environmental and physical constraints, and production opportunities. It looks to future-proof local and regional economies, considers the social and cultural background relevant to existing communities, and uses heritage and conservation as a tool to learn from the past to build the future. The matrix considers what sustainable growth would look like if we promote innovation as a key factor in future decision-making.

Secondly, we work to a delivery programme that defines realistic goals and milestones within short, medium, and long term timescales. Delivering a phased, clearly structured programme with specific targets is crucial so that these can be managed and funded within a clear working framework from the outset.

Thirdly, developing Social Capital and Social Value within these new neighbourhoods and communities enables them to go beyond bricks and mortar and thrive through social integration, collaboration, and community ownership. By fostering inclusive activities and creating spaces for people to connect, we can deliver social, environmental, and financial value that strengthens the local fabric.

And finally, by placing sustainability at the heart of everything we do, we ensure that the places we design and deliver work for current and future generations, enabling healthy places that are fit for all.

Lessons from the past have taught us that when these four elements are brought together in a balanced and coordinated way, we can truly deliver successful places that pass the test of time.
