Shelter has found one in 53 people in the capital are currently homeless, one in 81 people in Manchester, and one in 96 people in Birmingham. In Scotland, someone becomes homeless every 19 minutes, with 11,804 children impacted in 2020-2021 alone.

.

Across the UK, homelessness is soaring. Whether it be the impact of Covid, mental health, rising rents, or low wages – the causes are complex, but the numbers are undeniable.

Shelter has found one in 53 people in the capital are currently homeless, one in 81 people in Manchester, and one in 96 people in Birmingham. In Scotland, someone becomes homeless every 19 minutes, with 11,804 children impacted in 2020-2021 alone.

So, what can be done to help? The “Everyone In” initiative, which saw rough sleepers housed in hotels during the pandemic, lead to a decrease in figures by 5% in 2020 and demonstrates what can be achieved in a short space of time. Campaigners are calling for a further increase in Local Housing Allowance and more social housing.

Iceni Projects are seeking to raise awareness of this growing issue by doing a Sleep Out to Help Out tomorrow night, in support of Land Aid – a property industry charity whose mission is to end youth homelessness in the UK.

LandAid’s mission is to:

  • Provide safe, secure accommodation for young people experiencing homelessness, or those at risk of becoming homeless;
  • Get involved with largescale capital projects, such as the landmark scheme at LandAid House;
  • Provide Free Property Advice by matching property professionals with charities in need of advice and support.
  • Nineteen of us from across the UK will be sleeping out to raise £166 each (or £3,154 in total) – which is the cost of a bedspace for one month.
