As a multi-skilled consultancy with numerous technical specialisms, Iceni Projects advises a range of clients on how to deliver sustainable development in challenging urban environments. However, last year we took on a new challenge – developing our own office in an underground car park in Clerkenwell.

When we found the space three years ago, all we could see was a pitch black, cavernous underground car park – and we knew it was perfect. We knew we had the in-house expertise to turn this underutilised space into a unique, bright and welcoming office environment – to become the new home of Iceni Projects in London.

Obviously there were frustrations along the way – including the uncertainties of the acquisition process, conducting our own consultation exercises, and waiting patiently to secure planning permission (thankfully we managed that bit). But, working with our long-standing landlord at Charing Cross Road and client, Estates & Agency, a variety of Iceni teams were involved in the transformation of the space from the initial site visit right the way through to project completion.

Through our unique approach to the transformation of this underutilised space, we’ve gained an office space for 130 people on one floor (a rare find in London these days), BREEAM Very Good sustainability rating, and a friendly and inviting office designed with a focus on places to talk and meet rather than simply heads-down working. Given the lack of places to forage for space in London these days, we think that our own office is a perfect demonstration of how we can help to unlock under-utilised sites in dense urban environments.

We are extremely proud of our new home and as part of Clerkenwell Design Week we will be hosting an open studio between 14.00-18.00 on 21-23 May 2019. Full details of the event can be found here. Clerkenwell Design Week provides a world-class showcase of leading UK and international designers, brands and companies across showroom events, exhibitions, live talks, workshops, installations and more.
