Abbey Road and Barking Wharf Phase 2

Two major new developments in Barking, including tall buildings, in a sensitive heritage and townscape context within the settings of highly listed buildings, conservation areas and a scheduled ancient monument

Iceni’s Heritage and Townscape Teams are currently advising on two major residential-led developments in Barking, including tall buildings, to deliver in the region of 1700 new homes.

The Abbey Road and Barking Wharf Phase 2 sites, either side of the River Roding in Central Barking, are a major component in the wider regeneration of the area. We are providing heritage and townscape support on both projects. On Abbey Road, our input is part of the wider services being provided by Iceni, which also covers Planning, EIA, Transport, Engagement and Sustainability, and Iceni were also responsible for securing consent, in 2016, for the adjacent site.

The Abbey Road and Barking Wharf Phase 2 schemes are planned to deliver, together, in the region of 1700 new homes. Our input has involved the provision of Baseline Heritage and Townscape Assessments to inform design development with architects Broadway Malyan, pre-application discussions with the local planning authority, Be First, and close consultation with Historic England.

Our baseline documents, including preliminary viewpoint studies, have been key in establishing an agreed starting point for developing schemes that can be supported by Be First and Historic England. We have liaised with the architects and specialist visualisation consultants to aid these discussions, and are now working towards the provision of supporting documentation for the full planning applications on both schemes, including Heritage Statements, Townscape and Visual Impact Assessments, and Environmental Statement chapters.
