It was only last week that the repercussions of the Suez Canal incident were being felt across UK ports, with delayed shipments finally disembarking. Over the last 12 months, the cost of global shipping has increased by up to 450%. Whether we use online shopping or not, we are all heavily reliant upon global supply channels for food; PPE equipment; vaccines and other life essentials.

At the national level, the logistics sector is turbocharged, having seen five years growth in just six months. We’ve seen sales at online retailer ASOS jump a fifth as well as them taking out the high street stalwart, Topshop. Tesco has hired 10,000 pickers and 3,000 drivers. And, at Amazon, they have generated $100 billion in revenues in just three months!

Over the last 12 months, Iceni Projects has seen the extent of innovation and disruption in the sector. Which trends are likely to have the greatest impact over the coming years?

We are unpacking the key issues for the sector and have been speaking to the biggest names in the business helping to explore two areas:

Sustainability. Change is undoubtedly occurring, but who is demanding it? Is the consumer pushing for electric vehicle deliveries, grouped orders and environmental considerate packaging? Or is it the funds and institutions that are redirecting pension funds away from petrochemicals and tobacco into new long-term growth assets? What does sustainability look like moving into the future? And, in the year of COP26 will the pace of change accelerate?

The workforce. The logistics sector is plagued with the perception it is low skilled and low paid work. Or worse still, that robots will soon govern the workforce, leaving no one with a job. So, what is the reality? Who actually works in logistics and has this changed with COVID-19? In the post Brexit world is finding staff a challenge? If yes, how is the sector pivoting to attract and retain? Is staff wellness and mindfulness a buzzword that actually masks poor working conditions and operational ruthlessness?
